Welcome to my coaching site.
This website has a number of purposes:
- To introduce myself.
- Keep my athletes updated on their training sessions and upcoming competitions.
- To post competition results and hopefully some competition pictures.
- Encourage new athletes to come along to our sessions.
- As a place to discuss all things athletics.
About Me.
Hi i'm Simon Simpson a uk:athletics level 3 performance and development coach for Jarrow & Hebburn Athletics Club.
I have been a runner since I was 5. I joined Jarrow and Hebburn Athletics Club when I was 12 after my Dad took my brother and I along to a training session and have been a member ever since. I trained for a number of years as a middle distance athlete before stepping down to the 400m. I competed for the club and school area for a number of years before deciding that all the training and competition was not for me. Instead of quitting athletics I was persuaded to take my level 1 coaching award and to start helping out other coaches. I did this and haven't looked back, I'd like to think I make a better coach than I did an athlete. I have been an active volunteer coach for the club for the last 24 years.
As well as being an athletics coach I also work as a Sports Activity Officer for South Tyneside Council. This involves going into schools and coaching various sports and activities and setting up sessions and clubs in community and leisure centres. As well as helping to develop coaching opportunities and mentor new coaches.
I hold a number of NGB level 1 awards in different sports and am also an advanced Multi Skills coach. I am a firm believer in Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and as such attempt to coach all my athletes for a life time involvement in sport at whichever level they choose.
I hold a recent Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, am insured through UK:athletics and hold private insurance through Sports Coach UK. I have attended the following Sports Coach UK workshops "Safeguarding and Protecting Children level 1 and 2" and "Equity in Coaching" as well as holding a current St. John's Ambulance First Aid Certificate.
I still enjoy running to keep fit but much prefer longer steadier runs these days.
I started off coaching as a level 1 assistant endurance coach but over the years have progressed to become a level 3 performance and development coach in endurance / middle distance and coaching young athletes (CYA). I also hold a Children in Athletics Award (CIA) as well as level 2 awards in sprints, jumps and throws and a Leadership in Running Fitness Award. Over the years i have progressed to coaching beginner and novice running groups for adults, sprinting, throwing and jumping. As of August 2011 i am concentrating on coaching sprints. I am the Speed Development coach for the Club. I now have a number of groups made up of differing ages, gender and abilities:
- Endurance Performance Group. This group is for athletes 15 years and over who are running and competing regularly at club / county level or above.
- Speed Development Group. Is for athletes 12 years and over who are new to sprinting or who sprint to supplement their throws or jumps training.
- Endurance Development Group. For beginner or improving athletes 12 and over who wish to keep fit, socialise, improve and compete.
- Long Jump Group. For athletes 12 years and over who wish train specifically for the long jump.
- Junior Athletics Group. For children 8 to 11 year old. This is an introduction to real and sports hall athletics. Athletes learn the basics of all athletic events.
- Mini Athletics Group. For children aged 5 to 8 years. These sessions aim to improve the child's Balance, Co-ordination and Agility along with introducing the FUNdamentals of running, jumping and throwing in a fun setting.
- Run England Group. For adults 18 plus. This is a beginners / improvers group that meets once a week at Monkton Stadium on a Wednesday evening. This is a 10 week introduction to running course that is designed to give people the fitness, knowledge and confidence to run. This is a Run In England / England Athletics affiliated course.
- Advanced Run England Group. For adults 18 plus. This group is designed for those adults who have attended the Run in England Course and who are ready and interested in progressing with their running and fitness. Although you don't have to have attended the Run in England course. It is suggested that if you are new to running or have not ran in a long time that you go through the Run In England course first to give you a base level of fitness before trying this group. If you are unsure then please do not hesitate to contact me at one of the following email addresses.
- Junior Run England Group. Similar to the adult Run In England Group. This is for young people aged 12-17 years of age. It is definitely not intended for experienced runners. Rather it is for people who have never run before or who have not run in a long time. This is a 10 week course designed to take you though the following stages of learning to run. Walking, Walk to Jog, Jog to Run and Running. This is a Run In England / UK Athletics affiliated group. Lead by me (a qualified, experienced and insured Leadership in Running Fitness run leader and level 3 coach).
